Slightly modified from the original  Starbot poster (and not grungy), this is a concept poster for Bots High. I’m not going to use it as an official poster, because I feel like if this was the only impression you had of Bots High, it wouldn’t give you enough of a sense of what the film is about. But I think it’s cool enough that I didn’t want to keep it buried on my hard drive.

The disclaimer still stands – definitely not to scale. It’s probably like one pixel on the foot of the red robot.

There’s cutting it close, and then there’s absurdity. That was the latter.

Above is one of four character posters from the film. I had a lot of fun putting these together. As you can see, they’re really simple and each features a favorite quote of mine that they say in the film.

“You’re a girl, you do BattleBots? Do you even know what a motor is?”

I made them for an ad campaign for an eBook I just released for another project (It’s on life hacking. Check it out here.).

If you’ve found yourself here because you just read the article, then welcome! Bots High is a documentary I’ve been working on for over a year. I’m currently wrapping up editing, and then the film will be sent off to get the sound and image polished. It’ll hit the festival circuit early next year.

Here are ways to stay connected with the film:

• Newsletter – Sign-up for the newsletter. Frequency is about once a month, if that, so you won’t be getting bombarded with emails. This is also the best way to find out about screenings and DVD releases.
• Facebook Page – Most of the updates I post are here, along with links to cool things I find online.
• Twitter – I post a lot of updates here too
• YouTube & Vimeo – There are a few podcasts up. As editing the actual documentary comes to an end, more podcasts will start coming up. In a way they’ll be mini-documentaries. I shot over 100 hours of footage. 1% of that made it into the film. There’s lots of little side stories that just couldn’t fit into the film, and they’ll be put online.

Above is a poster idea I had for Starbot, the not-for-profit robot workshop that sort of serves as the unifying hub of all the robotics programs in South Florida. It’s inspired by a pep-talk Nola (head of Startbot and BotsIQ) gives to all the robotics classes, which is there’s 6 billion people in the world, and “this many [hold fingers up] build robots.” For the poster’s case I changed it to kids, because that’s what it’s all about.

Still needs some tweaking and grunge-ing, but I like it.
